The Importance of Stress Management
These days, it seems we’ve all gone “Warp 10″ on the Starship Stress-Me-Out. Honestly, it’s like were competing for the Nobel Stress Prize. It’s like we’re running around like headless chickens with all the gusto. Then we begin to ask questions like, “What’s the point?” It’s a sure sign: we’re stressed. The one benefit of chronic stress: we get to rest soon, we’ll be pushing up daisies. How can we get off the bullet train? That’s not a question that can be answered in a one-size-fits-all, ball cap approach. We’re all unique and at different stages in life, with different stressors bringing all of this on. 1) Get a support group. This can either make or break your success. Since this isn’t negotiable, if you don’t have anyone to suit the job, then you may have to hire a professional counselor.
2) Get fit. In the interest of brevity, suffice it to say that your body produces chemicals like cortisol that are caused by and perpetuate stress. Your body begins to digest helpful tissues like bone and muscle, even organ tissues, to compensate for stress. It sounds a bit sci-fi, but your body under stress begins to break itself down entering a “catabolic state.” Under chronic stressful conditions, this can lead to serious health concerns. Counter-acting and preventing this detrimental state can be achieved through “anabolism,” or building healthy bone and muscle by exercise.
3) Diet as a lifestyle. The body reacts to stress by trying to get back to “homeostasis.” Improper diet can lead to situations where your body is simply reacting to a lack of nutrients by doing wild things like storing belly fat, catabolizing muscle and bone tissue like we’ve just mentioned, increasing bad cholesterol and doing really funky things with the cardiovascular system. You can also be in a state called “metabolic acidosis,” which is essentially a state where the ageing processes in our bodies are on a bullet train headed downhill. Strongly consider taking a mulit-vitamin if you’re not already. You should strongly consider adding the B-complex vitamins, as well as vitamins A, C and E, a buffering agent called potassium bicarbonate, and a great herb called “Caterpillar Mushroom Extract. Dietary supplementation is a great way to fight off poor eating, but eating wholesome foods is also something to start doing. As an absolutely non-negotiable: you HAVE TO consult with your doctor before making any of these dietary changes.
4) Relax! If you don’t, I just might get stressed out too. You need to have proper “chill time” on a daily basis. If you’re human, you are either up late working or watching past episodes of “The Cosby Show” or something you laugh at (or you should be). It’s been shown laughter helps manage stress. The body needs proper rest - a good 7-8 hours is a fantastic way to stop the stress cycle. There are more studies proving sleep is a chief cause for stress that we can’t count them all. With just about a week’s worth of sound sleep, your stress will already begin to dissipate.
5) Stop and taste the “joy”. This hasn’t been an exhaustive list, but a last sound tip is to take time to do something you find absolutely relaxing and joyful. This can be a time for just you alone, or you can incorporate family and friends. Don’t put this off as if it doesn’t matter, taking time to slow down and do something enjoyable just might give you the perspective and rest you need to recover.
